Minato was born in Kanagawa prefecture in 1960.
Beginning with his sojourn in several places in South America as a college Student,he has photographed nature and culture along the equator, around the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, and in many other parts of the world.
His Creative works in writing and art include Kioku :“Sozo”to“Soki”no chikara (Memory : Powers of “Creation”and “Remenbering”; Kodansha,1996)for which he received the Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities and the “Chromatic Citizen”exhibition, which won the 31st Ina Nobuo Award.
He served as the Commissioner of the Japanese Pavillion at the 52nd Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition in 2007 and took part in the editing of Hiroshima 1958 (published by Inscript), a collection of photographs taken by the French actress Emmanuelle Riva, as well as in the curation of the exhition version held simultaneously.
His photo collections include Shunkan no yama : Keitai Soushutsu to Seisei(Our Mountains of Metamorphosis : morphogenesis and sacredness) and Moji no hahatachi : Le Voyage Typographique (Mothers of Characters : Le Voyage Typographique), published by the Tokyo publisher Inscript in 2001 and 2007, Respectively.
Among his recent writings are Levi-Strauss no niwa (Les Jardins de Levi Strauss ; NTT Shuppan,2008),Shomotsu no hen: Guguruberugu no jidai(Book Revolution : The Googleberg Era;Serika Shobo,2010),and Pari wo aruku(Walking Paris; NTT shuppan,2011), Minato is Currently professor in the Faculty of Art Design, the Department of Information Design at Tama Art University and a member of the university’s Institure for Art Anthropology.
